Season

When they sail more often

The timetable follows the summer traffic. From mid-June to mid-September, the period of the Operación Paso del Estrecho, the operators add extra sailings and the ships sail full. Book weeks ahead then and count on queues at customs in Beni Ensar. In winter it is quiet: fewer sailings, lower prices, a better chance of the cabin you want.

In strong wind or high waves a sailing can be delayed or cancelled. Check the operator’s website the day before, and the forecast below.

Sea and wind

Waves and wind at the Strait of Gibraltar

Live forecast from Ferryweather. The Alborán Sea between Almería and Nador lies just east of the Strait and is usually calmer; in a storm in the Strait a sailing can shift here too.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about the timetable

When do I have to be at the port?

That differs per operator: Baleària wants you on the quay with the car five hours before departure, GNV four hours, AML two hours, and with Naviera Armas boarding closes one hour before departure. The times with their sources are on the check-in page.

Are the times here always right?

The times come straight from the operators via Direct Ferries and are refreshed several times a day. In a storm or a breakdown a sailing can still shift: always check with the operator before you leave.

Can I take a different sailing than the one I booked?

Sometimes, for a fee and if there is space. Ask at the operator’s desk in the port, not at sales points outside the grounds.
