How check-in works for the ferry to Nador
Checking in for the ferry to Nador is more than showing a ticket: you drive into the port of Almería, pass security and the Spanish passport check, and park the car on the vehicle deck. That takes time, and every operator asks a different margin for it: Baleària wants to see you on the quay with the car five hours before departure, with Naviera Armas boarding closes one hour before. This page lists those times per operator, with the source, and below them the steps from the port gate to the barrier in Beni Ensar.
Which sailings there are, you see on the timetable. Which papers you must carry and what Moroccan customs does with your car is under customs and documents.
When do you have to be at the port
Every operator has its own times, and they differ a lot. These are the times as the operators publish them, checked on 9 September 2026. If they change, what your operator says applies.
| Operator | With a car | Without a car | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baleària | 5 hours before departure on the quay | not published separately for this route | Baleària help centre |
| GNV | 4 hours before departure, check-in closes 1 hour before | 3 hours before departure | GNV, port of Almería |
| AML | 2 hours before departure, 3 hours in busy periods | 2 hours before departure, 3 hours in busy periods | AML, FAQ |
| Naviera Armas | boarded at the latest 1 hour before departure | boarded at the latest 1 hour before departure | Armas Trasmediterránea, FAQ |
Baleària and GNV name the moment you must be present, Naviera Armas the latest boarding time, AML a recommended arrival time. In Nador customs and exit control come before boarding: add that time.
From the port gate in Almería to Morocco
This is how the trip goes with a car. In July and August every queue takes longer.
-
Arrival at the port of AlmeríaFrom the A-7 (exit 438) follow the signs Puerto and then the name of your operator. Be as early as your operator asks: Baleària five hours, GNV four hours, AML two hours before departure.
-
Check-inWith Baleària you go straight to boarding with a digital boarding pass. With the other operators you report at the desk with your booking, the passports and the registration document. The car must have the length and height you booked.
-
Security and passport controlLuggage through the scanner, and the Spanish police stamps the passports for leaving the Schengen area. With a car this often happens from the car, at a checkpoint on the quay.
-
The car on boardWith Baleària only the driver drives the car on board. The other passengers walk via the passenger entrance, a rule of the port authority. Ask the other operators how it works there. Take everything you need on the way upstairs: the vehicle deck is closed during the crossing.
-
Moroccan passport control on boardShortly after departure the Moroccan police desk opens on board. Hand in the completed police form with all passports. With the stamp you may leave the ship later.
-
Arrival in Beni EnsarAfter the announcement stay with the car on the vehicle deck and drive off as directed. Follow the signs to customs.
-
The car through customsShow passport, registration document, insurance and, if needed, the letter of authorisation. Customs registers the temporary import (D16 ter). Keep the document with your passport: you hand it in when you leave.
-
Into MoroccoAfter the barrier you are in Beni Ensar. Nador is fifteen minutes away, Oujda two hours, Al Hoceima two and a half hours. Fuel, cash and a SIM card you sort out on the way or in Nador.
Checking in in Nador for the return
Back from Nador it goes in reverse order and everything starts in the port of Beni Ensar: check-in with the operator, Moroccan customs taking back the car’s import document, the Moroccan exit stamp, and then on board. In Almería only the Spanish passport check follows on arrival.
Be in Nador well in time, because customs and exit control come before boarding. The time the operator names is the latest boarding time; customs comes on top: usually quick outside the high season, much longer during Operation Marhaba and around public holidays. GNV opens check-in in Nador nine hours before departure and closes it on this route two hours before departure. The other operators publish no separate time for Nador. In summer the queue stretches outside the port.
Luggage, gas and special cargo
As a foot passenger you may bring plenty of luggage, as long as you can carry it yourself. Large or fragile items are tagged separately at the desk. With a car you secure everything well and declare gas bottles, jerrycans, batteries and other hazardous goods to the operator beforehand; the rules differ per operator. That includes the gas bottles in a motorhome: declare them and close the valves during the crossing. If you run on LPG, say so when booking and at check-in: Baleària puts gas cars in a separate spot in the garage, with the other operators you ask.
If your plans change or you are late
Rebooking and no-shows you arrange with the operator, not with the port. Flexible or dearer fares allow changes and cancellations, the cheapest fares usually do not. If you miss the ship, go straight to your operator’s desk: sometimes you can take the next sailing for a fee. With AML your ticket stays valid for a year for a later crossing after a missed sailing, if there is space. Arrange this at the operator’s desk, not at sales points outside the port grounds.
Frequently asked questions about check-in
Why does Baleària want to see me five hours ahead?
Baleària publishes for Almería-Nador an arrival time of five hours before departure with a vehicle, the longest of all its routes to Morocco. If you are later, Baleària does not guarantee boarding. So plan with your own operator’s time, not with an average.
Can we all stay in the car going on board?
Not with Baleària: only the driver drives the car on board, the others walk via the passenger entrance. So take out of the car beforehand what the passengers need on board.
Can I go to Morocco with a national ID card?
No, for Morocco you need a passport valid for the whole trip; GOV.UK asks for at least three months after arrival. That applies to everyone in the car, children included.
Where is the Moroccan passport control?
On board, during the crossing. Join the queue as soon as the desk opens, then you are not left waiting on arrival. Everything about the form and the stamp is under customs and documents.
I am driving someone else’s car. What do I need?
The registration document, a letter of authorisation from the owner and insurance that covers Morocco. Which papers go with which car is on the customs page.
Out of the car and upstairs
- Passports, booking and the police form, you need those on board
- Medicines, a jumper or blanket and earplugs for the night ferry
- Food and drink for the children, on board it is dearer
- Charger or power bank, and valuables
- Toiletries if you booked a cabin
- Keep the car key with you, the vehicle deck is closed until arrival
